It can get complicated. Then what?
We’ve talked a lot about the importance of proper estimates this past year. In fact, we’ve had two webinars on beginner’s estimates and intermediate estimates, where Peter McCullough of Raven Research has walked us through the steps for figuring out the size of a move and what to do with that information.
On those webinars, there was a lot of chat about challenges with confidently estimating moves that included packing and crating, long carries, high-end items, and everything in between. As we all know, each move is like a snowflake – no two are alike. And we also all know that an incorrect estimate can trigger a domino effect that can leave you and your company in more than a jar of pickles. |
|
|
The beginner’s and intermediate estimating webinars cover a lot of those situations. (By the way, you can find those – and many other helpful webinars – in the members only section of our website.
On Thursday, Peter and I are at it again! This time, we are delving into more advanced scenarios that can make your estimate difficult to nail down. Things like large residential moves, or jobs that involve extra pick-ups and deliveries, to name a few.
And we are also going to talk about best practices for customer service when things go kerflooey because of an incorrect estimate.
Even if you haven’t attended or seen the first two webinars, but are interested in this one, please register and join us! The unrecorded conversation afterwards is often just as informative as Peter’s presentation and discussion!

This Thursday: Webinar 2508 – Advanced Guide to Estimating (And How to Troubleshoot When We Miss) |
|
|
When: Thursday, September 11, 2025, 1 p.m. ET
Cost: Free to CAM members / $30 for non-members
Take your estimating skills to the next level with “Advanced Guide to Estimating (and How to Troubleshoot When We Miss).” Peter McCullough of Raven Research will tackle the complexities of estimating multi-truck and multi-day jobs, focusing on both large residential moves (like two trucks and six crew members, or jobs requiring loading on one day and delivery on another) and office relocations, which often carry similar challenges.
You’ll learn practical strategies for:
• Building accurate estimates for complex, multi-phase moves
• Understanding how residential challenges translate to office moving scenarios
• Navigating logistical variables that can turn a straightforward job into a multi-truck or multi-day project
Plus, we’ll dedicate time to customer service best practices for when estimates go wrong. Discover effective troubleshooting strategies, learn why starting from the cube sheet is critical, and see how to recover quickly and professionally when the numbers don’t work out as planned. This is your essential guide for making (and correcting) tricky estimates with confidence.

On August 10th, the moving industry came together for a day of golf, raising $1,550 for @backpackbuddiesbc to help ensure local kids have food when school’s out. Despite it being the hottest day in Canada, every player rose to the challenge.
“This tournament was about more than golf,” says organizer Mark Hirschi. “It was about meeting new people, making new friends, and building stronger connections in our industry and community.”

LiveSwitch Now Backed by Artificial Intelligence |
|
|
On Friday, August 29, LiveSwitch released a major update to its video estimate platform, now backed by artificial intelligence. LiveSwitch users can now produce a moving inventory report that is automatically generated by AI, reviewing both the video and audio context (such as if a customer states an item is being sold or given away, and therefore will not be moved) to list inventory by room, along with estimated volumes. |
|
|
Additional AI updates include full meeting transcripts, summaries, sales call feedback, and the ability for LiveSwitch users to build their own custom AI prompts for reviewing video, photo, and/or audio information to generate specific outputs and call/video analyses.
You can see a short video that explains the new LiveSwitch updates here. For more information or to see a demo, please contact Ryan Gaus. Be sure to mention CAM when contacting LiveSwitch! |

What Are the Common Pitfalls of Relying on Resumes and References for Soft Skills? |
1. Resume embellishment
One of the most obvious pitfalls of relying on resumes for soft skills is that they can be embellished or exaggerated by candidates who want to impress employers. 2. Reference bias
Another pitfall of relying on references for soft skills is that they can be biased or inaccurate. 3. Context dependence
A third pitfall of relying on resumes and references for soft skills is that they can be context dependent. That is, they can reflect the specific situation, environment, or culture that the candidate was in, but not necessarily how they would perform or adapt in your organization.
To assess soft skills and potential more effectively and avoid common pitfalls, you can use alternative methods such as behavioral interviews, work samples or simulations, and assessments or tests.
