President's Message

Having a heart – caring for your coworkers and yourself

Have you ever had one of those days when your head just hurt so much, and you started panicking because you felt incredibly overwhelmed?

I have.  Countless times over my forty-five years in the workforce.

There’s so much to do and only so many hours to do it in.  Your customers are demanding too much of your time and your family is getting too little of it. And just when do you have time for yourself to chill and reboot to get some energy to clear your mind? Probably never or not enough.

Being overwhelmed is something to be taken seriously.  To have the feeling that you’re drowning in responsibility can be devastating to your mental health. Depression or general unhappiness. Anxiety and agitation. Moodiness, irritability, or anger.  Eventually, as we all know, it will affect your physical health by suppressing your immune system, upsetting your digestive and reproductive systems, increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke, and speeding up the aging process.  I have earned every piece of grey hair!

It’s important to recognize that your spouse or a family member, your co-worker or, most importantly, yourself is displaying symptoms that they’re overwhelmed. The effects of stress can be contagious, and relieving stress shouldn’t be a burden for anyone to carry alone.  Tell people you are freaking out about your workload.  Having a friend, or being a friend, during a stressful period can make a huge difference.

Here are 17 great tips that are so simple that you can use to help counterbalance the stress.  Keep them in mind when you’re with someone else who is showing the signs of being overwhelmed.

Our industry is built on families.  Not only do we move families, but the foundation of our individual businesses is family.  We need to take care of each other.  Please do.  We’re all better when we’re functioning at full health.

Staying Competitive in the Post-Election Marketplace

Leon Johnson, Matco Moving Solutions and CAM Board Member
IAM Portal Magazine, January-February 2025 issue

Are politics becoming too invasive in everyday life? Some might profess they don't believe so, but the fact is, politics and the recent post-election results affect our lives extensively.  Today more than ever, we are becoming increasingly entangled in political agendas of pre- and post-election results.

In Canada, we are fortunate to live in a peaceful and democratic nation. Sharing the longest international land border in the world with the United States has long been beneficial for both countries.

Recently, a different political agenda has started to emerge in the U.S. that will heavily influence a variety of sectors. The impact of this post-election government and its policies will certainly affect domestic and global relocation trends in the future.

Days of Yore

Thanks to CAM’s “historian” Steve Sharpe who sent in this fabulous photo of Tippet-Richardson!  Sadly, we don’t have a date for this, but we can guarantee it wasn’t yesterday!  For those of you who aren’t aware … this is an example of the origin of why that thicker box that you pack plates and glasses in is called a “China Barrel.”

Do you have any photos you’d like to share?  We’d love to see them!  Send them to Marian.

Save Time and Money in 2025 with Virtual Estimates

Even the best–maintained fleets might suffer breakdowns, and the best-trained drivers could end up in an accident that's not their fault. The key to keeping your drivers safe is to make sure they're prepared to handle any emergency.

The safety bulletin, Breakdowns and Emergencies: Prepare for the Unexpected, offers some simple strategies your drivers can use to prevent and manage roadside emergencies, including:

•    Performing proper pre-trip inspections
•    Keeping emergency kits, tool kits and first–aid kits fully stocked
•    Using your fleet's preferred roadside assistance and towing teams

Please print, post and share this monthly Safety Bulletin with your drivers to help them stay safe on the road.

For your convenience, past Safety Bulletins are available here.

Your employees are the lifeblood of your organization. Their knowledge and expertise are crucial to your company’s success and it takes time and effort to amass both.  The good news is that most employees are willing — even eager — to learn and grow professionally.

Investing in learning programs can help your organization and team members enjoy the many benefits of employee development.

3. Addressing skills gaps and future-proofing your organization

Skill sets for jobs have changed by around 25% since 2015 and this number is expected to grow to 65% by 2030. This is creating a significant skills gap, with 75% of employers reporting they can’t find talent with the right mix of skills.

Professional development helps your team members learn the in-demand skills they need to succeed in their current role — and the emerging skills they’ll need to have in the future.

For example, management and leadership skills were among the most in-demand competencies employers sought last year. Nine out of 10 human resource professionals indicated their organization had management skill gaps — and 78% of those were providing internal training to address those gaps.

Upskilling and reskilling benefits your team members, as well as your organization. Employees learn the skills they need to stay relevant in an evolving job market and your organization builds a skilled workforce that’s equipped to navigate future challenges and opportunities. It’s no surprise 89% of L&D pros agree that proactively building employee skills will help navigate the evolving future of work.

Stay tuned for part 4 on enhancing employee performance coming in the next issue.

Protecting Moving Businesses from Invoicing Fraud

FIDI Focus, January 8, 2025

As the rate of cybercrime and phishing incidences increases, there has been a rise in cases involving digital invoicing scams, where fraudsters manipulate payment details, leading to substantial financial losses.

Invoice fraud, also known as ‘fake invoice fraud’ or ‘phishing invoicing,’ happens when fraudsters send a falsified invoice to a company, posing as a legitimate supplier. The invoice may appear to be from a known partner but often contains modified bank account details, leading the unsuspecting company to pay money into a scammer’s account.

Fraudsters may even go as far as calling companies, in your name, in your sector, requesting payments for your company’s invoices to be made to a different bank account. These schemes are often sophisticated, so even seasoned professionals can fall victim to them. But there are some straightforward steps your company can take to protect yourself.

Thank you to Marie-Pascale Frix, FIDI’s Business Intelligence Manager for providing some practical steps to mitigate the risks.

Achieving A More Effective Employee Onboarding Process

According to Gallup Workplace, only 29% of new hires say they feel fully prepared and supported to excel in their new role after their onboarding experience. In other words, most of your new employees are probably underperforming, disengaged, hesitant to recommend working at your company, and at an elevated risk of leaving.

But employees who have a clear plan for their professional development are 3.5x more likely to agree that their onboarding process was exceptional.

Building an employee development plan and incorporating early learning into your onboarding process can set you up for higher employee satisfaction and productivity from the start. This is crucial for building employee engagement: New hires who strongly agree their onboarding process was exceptional are 3x more likely to say they have the best possible job.

Stay tuned for part 3 on addressing skills gaps and future-proofing your organization coming in the next issue.
