President’s Message

Stopping to smell the flowers!

In two weeks, I’ll be spending my “vacation” helping my daughter move to Bexley, England—six suitcases in tow—as she settles into her new apartment before starting her teaching job on September 1st. Between apartment hunting, furniture shopping, and buying all the small appliances and electronic power cords with those giant U.K. plugs, it’s going to be hectic. Timing isn't ideal, but when is it ever?

Meanwhile, CAM has a lot on the go: two deadlines—July 31st and August 31st—for three key events coming up, with our fall calendar packed. After Labour Day, we’ll hit the ground running with organizing Golf Day on September 29th and our November conference in Kingston, processing the award nominations, and developing our next set of webinars and info sessions, as well as continuing to onboard new members.

We certainly haven’t been idle! In the first half of the year, we’ve hosted 7 webinars, processed 732 referrals, seen 64,214 views on our member directory alone, and registered 73 for the Canadian Professional Movers course (with 29 graduates). We’re also excited to have welcomed 10 new members since April—bringing CAMs membership roster to 385, nearing pre-pandemic levels.

Not to rest on our laurels, we’re also exploring new national collaborations to boost CAM awareness and help more people find trusted movers and services that you provide.

As Marian and I prepare for a busy fall, please note that from August 1 to September 4, we'll be on reduced schedules to catch our breath. We’ll check emails periodically and replies may be slower or deferred if not urgent.

Thanks for your continued support!

Don't Skip That Vacation
30seconds.com

People who routinely forfeit their vacation days do so for any number of reasons. Here are three reasons why you still need to take time off, even if the best you can do is a staycation:

People who take their vacation time:

•    are healthier.
•    are measurably more successful at work.
•    experience greater levels of well-being.

If COVID has taught us anything, it’s that there’s more to life than work, work, work. And while COVID has altered so many aspects of our everyday lives, the one thing you do control is not only how to spend your free time, but also allowing yourself to take that time in the first place.

CAM Award Nominations—Deadline August 31st

For 25 years CAM has been recognizing excellence in the moving industry. Whether it’s a long-time high-profile employee, someone behind the scenes who has dedicated their work-life to the betterment of the industry, or a moving company that has gone beyond the call of duty to help their community, our Association wants to acknowledge people who should be recognized for their work to improve the moving industry.

There are several categories of awards. Our Awards Committee reviews all nominations and selects the deserving recipients each year. Please note that not every category is automatically awarded each year.

•    Mover of the Year recognizing a prominent CAM mover member who demonstrates outstanding corporate citizenship and customer service excellence. The mover can either be an agent of a van line or an independent.
•    Distinguished Service honouring a prominent member of the profession with a long, exceptional history of contributions to the moving industry and to CAM.
•    Industry Leadership recognizes an individual who demonstrates leadership and serves as an inspiration to others.
•    Influencer celebrating a promising young professional (under the age of 40) in the moving industry who embodies a commitment to business growth, professional excellence, and the future of the industry and community.
•    Public Service honouring an individual, group or organization who has performed a significant act or acts of moving-related service in the public interest.

Deadline for 2025 nominations is August 31, 2025.

Awards are going to be handed out at our annual banquet on Tuesday, November 18th at the Holiday Inn Kingston Waterfront Hotel in Kingston, Ontario. Everyone welcome!

Momentum is Building: CAMs Post-Pandemic Growth

CAM is excited to share that our membership has grown to 385—an increase of 6.4% since December 2024, with 10 new members joining since April. At the height of the pandemic in May 2023, membership had fallen to 349 due to business closures and consolidations, so it’s encouraging to see this strong rebound.

We’re seeing growing interest from independent movers, with 71 now CAM-certified—making up 27% of our mover membership. We also have 45 supplier members, offering a wide range of services and products. Both categories have now reached all-time highs.

We’re steadily approaching our pre-pandemic membership levels—and we thank you for being part of this progress.

Hawaii Faces New Hurdles for Electric Vehicles Amid Shipping, Safety, and Insurance Challenges

Getting an electric vehicle (EV) in Hawaii has suddenly become much harder due to restrictions by major shipping companies and evolving insurance regulations. Matson, Hawaii’s largest ocean carrier, has temporarily stopped shipping electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in both directions, citing growing concerns about fire risks linked to lithium-ion batteries—especially after a recent shipboard fire near Alaska. This disruption could lead to longer wait times and higher costs for consumers trying to buy or import EVs to the islands.

Insurance is also a major complication. EVs must be declared as dangerous goods for marine transport, but most insurance companies will not insure them under standard marine policies. Industry voices, including members of the CAM’s International Committee, highlight that shipping an EV, such as a Tesla, now requires extensive paperwork and approvals. The process is complex and involves special declarations as Dangerous Cargo before shipment is allowed.

CAM Supplier Committee Chair, John Kelly, of Hansen’s, noted that Matson’s policy shift wasn’t surprising, given the recent Alaska incident, and predicted that shipping lines will struggle to get insurance for EVs until the technology proves less risky. “So far, these changes have had limited immediate impact because EVs still make up a small fraction of vehicle shipments—but this could change as adoption rates rise,” he said.

Overall, Hawaii’s push toward more EVs is facing significant setbacks from transport restrictions and escalating insurance challenges, and without regulatory or technological changes, these obstacles may persist for the foreseeable future.
