MCAC NEWS

FROM DREW’S DESK...

April was a busy month for advocating on behalf of our membership. On April 21, MCAS participated in our annual Advocacy Day on Parliament Hill in Ottawa alongside fellow provincial MCAs and the Mechanical Contractors Association of Canda, connecting with Members of Parliament and their teams to explore the policy tools needed to drive productivity and innovation across Canada’s mechanical contracting industry.

Discussions ranged from tax policy to the mutual recognition of industry certifications—key issues that will help ensure mechanical contractors can continue delivering the infrastructure, housing, and essential projects Canada relies on.

Collaboration between industry and government is essential to developing meaningful solutions so that we can build Canada together.

Wiegers and MCAS – FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS!!!

SASKATCHEWAN YOUTH INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Saskatchewan Youth Internship Program (SYIP) focuses on Grade 10, 11 and graduating Grade 12 students considering a career in the trades. Students gain real world experience and have the opportunity to receive competitive wages, earn high school credits, and hours towards an apprenticeship. Students work alongside a mentor to experience first-hand what the skilled trades are about.

Students have the opportunity to apply for a summer job and be employed for 6 or more weeks during July and August, and potentially earn up to a maximum of four high school Apprenticeship credits. Participants may document these hours on a Sask. Apprenticeship 6A form, and bank these towards their application into the trade they have been immersed in for the summer.

Please note that if you have secured summer employment and would like to pursue the Apprenticeship credits please contact the RDIEC office, Meghan Gardiner (Program Facilitator) or Mark Edmonds (Executive Director).

Students must complete forms associated with their school division’s Apprenticeship credit acquisition. For example, in Regina Public, the AP form 2625.1 must be completed. Contact your guidance counsellor or our office if you have any questions concerning the completion of this form.

Students may be required to enroll in the Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship (SYA) program and complete the following safety courses.

1. Young Worker Readiness Certificate Course

2. Mental Health Wellness Training

3. SCOT – Safety Construction Orientation Training

4. Other certifications as required by potential employers (such as Fall Protection, WHMIS, etc.)

Students who have completed any of these courses must provide proof of completion (certification).

MEMBERSHIP CONNECTION

Sometimes we need advice, and we don’t know where to find it.  While MCAS staff are available to the membership, often a contractor simply needs to talk to another contractor. There is a wealth of knowledge available within our membership, but it needs to be accessible.

The solution:  MCAS Peer to Peer Program.

The concept is simple:  Provide a platform for members to seek the advice of other members.

Connecting is easy:  Simply visit the MCAS website and head to our Peer-to-Peer tab. There you will find a list of the names and contact information of contractors who are available to take your call or respond to an email.

And it is always confidential. Just another way we are adding value to your membership.

INDUSTRY FOCUSED. MEMBER DRIVEN.
