Mover’s Edge Quatercentenary
I had to look up “quatercentenary”—turns out, it means a 400th anniversary.
Honestly, I’ve never celebrated a 400th of anything before. Well, that’s not entirely true—on the same day we started working on this issue, Auston Matthews scored his 400th NHL goal. He’s in elite company, becoming the sixth-fastest player in NHL history to reach that mark. Quite an achievement. And, fun fact, New York City is marking 400 years since the first European settlement on Manhattan. That’s some serious history for the “Big Apple.”
|
|
|
In CAM’s history over 27 years, Mover’s Edge has really become a love letter to our members. We put a lot of hard work into it to bring you info that helps you personally and professionally, both in the office and across the industry. Your feedback tells us you appreciate it, so thank you for reading and sharing our news. And don’t forget to share with us your news! The editors are always looking for content.
This edition is special not just for the milestone, but also because it kicks off May is Moving Month (MIMM). We’re now in our eighth year partnering with the Better Business Bureau. This year, we’re continuing to focus on highlighting the value and importance of the moving industry, rather than just warning people about moving scams. Yes, we’ll still point out red flags and scam tactics, but we want to continue to spotlight quality and value. Because that’s what you are.
Scare tactics have worked effectively in the past, but not everyone listens—some folks will always chase the lowest price without doing their homework. Some of the old bad actors are resurfacing this Spring after a lull following the police raid three years ago, so I think you will see some additional challenges with low ball pricing this year.
CAMs messaging continues to reach more people, as shown by the increase in calls, inquiries, and website traffic.
Back when MIMM started, www.mover.net had about 2,500 users a month; by April 2018 when we were just starting to get social media presence, it was 3,683. Now, thanks to our social media and MIMM messaging, we’re averaging 13,080 visits a month—an over 400% jump! Visitors are coming to find movers, check consumer alerts, and use our moving planner.
We want you to succeed with your May is Moving Month social campaign too. Like, comment, and share our posts and tag us in yours—the more we amplify each other, the more our fabulous movers flood social media and help people move safely and smartly. If you’re new to social media and need a bit of a hand, ask your young staff to do posts or reach out to me. I’m happy to give you some quick ideas to get you started.
Cheers to 400 editions, and may we have many more!

The Lasting Impact of Mover’s Edge
For 400 editions, Mover’s Edge, CAM’s biweekly newsletter, has chronicled the evolution of the Canadian moving industry. Launched on June 2, 1998, the newsletter’s origins were a vital communication tool for CAM, connecting members to industry news and each other.
Many of the industry’s challenges—pricing, regulation, education, and consumer trust—remain as relevant as they were 27 years ago, but the tools, technology, and scale of engagement have advanced significantly. The newsletter’s role as a connector and information hub has only grown, and its historical content reflects an industry that is both rooted in tradition and the ever-changing landscape of household goods transportation.
Through pandemics, technological revolutions, and shifting consumer expectations, Mover’s Edge has remained a steady, relevant presence. Readership continues to grow monthly with over 2,500 member subscribers. Today, Mover’s Edge boasts a 43%-51% unique open rate for each issue—more than double the industry standard for digital newsletters. We couldn’t work harder or be prouder of each publication, and we thank you for taking a few moments every other Tuesday to peruse the news!
Click here to read the 1st issue of Mover’s Edge. It was an important connection to members then and it remains so today.

Fridays are tough for some to keep the energy going after a long week. James Messenger, Vice President/Partner of AMJ Campbell – Kitchener-Waterloo & London wanted to have some fun. Recently, he asked all the staff, “what is the one song you would play to pump you up and lift your energy?” He made a list of each person’s song, shared on excel, and put a vote system for a gift card. Sure enough, on the next Friday, he played all the songs through their phone systems. As James posted … it was “a lot of fun to start the day!”
There was lots of variety–everything from AC/DC’s Thunderstruck, Courage by the Hip, Daddy Yankee’s Gasolina to Ridin Dirt by Chamillionaire amongst many others. What was the most requested song? Smack That by Akon.
We’ll be adding those to our playlist as well. Thanks for the idea, James! #workcanbefunalso |

Managing Your Online Reputation... Before it Manages You
Since the pandemic, online shopping and selection of services has increased exponentially. Guess what? So have negative online reviews. Good online reputation management is not only about reacting well to what people say about you, your brand, or your products and services, but also about whether to react at all and, if so, when. Timing is critical, and big companies have whole teams, sentiment analysis software, or even reputation management firms to take care of all this on their behalf. But for a small-to-medium sized business, this work usually falls to you and your team. |

With Growth of AI Assistants, Employers Must Focus On Ethics, Says Expert
HR Reporter, March 26, 2025
'The technology is emerging so quickly and decisions are being made so quickly that we need to get in front of them before they cause harm.'
Artificial intelligence (AI) assistants will soon be available to many workers, and employers must urgently establish ethical guidelines around their use, according to one Canadian academic.
“We need ethical guidelines because the technology is emerging so quickly and decisions are being made so quickly that we need to get in front of them before they cause harm,” says Isabel Pedersen, professor in the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities, and firector of the Digital Life Institute, at Ontario Tech University.
“And the harm could be to individuals.”
As we navigate this new world, there are some interesting aspects of embracing this rapid growth in new technology.

Your employees are the lifeblood of your organization. Their knowledge and expertise are crucial to your company’s success and it takes time and effort to amass both. The good news is that most employees are willing—even eager—to learn and grow professionally.
Investing in learning programs can help your organization and team members enjoy the many benefits of employee development.
9. Improving business performance
Given the many benefits of employee development, it should come as no surprise that investing in learning has a tangible impact on your company’s bottom line. Everything from improving employee performance and engagement to reducing risk and turnover can improve profitability.
The Josh Bersin Company found organizations that facilitate career development are 3x more likely to delight customers, 4x more likely to innovate effectively, and 2.6x more likely to exceed financial targets. Similarly, Gallup reports companies that invest in development achieve 11% greater profitability.
With strong potential to see worthwhile returns on employee training and development, it would be a poor decision not to invest in these initiatives.
Stay tuned for a recap and some final thoughts on building an employee development program that works for your team coming in the next issue.

Presentations will all be about protection–protecting your business, your reputation, your margins and your drivers. Come meet some new contacts!

CAM Green Initiatives
Thank you to folks who took the time to fill out the “CAM Quickie” survey a few weeks back. As one respondent mentioned, “Our company needs to be more sustainable. We have only touched on the low hanging fruit.” While it is challenging in our industry to be completely green, CAM members are clearly trying to do the best. As we know, even small steps can collectively drive significant environmental progress. Maybe there’s an idea here that you can implement in your own shop.
Survey Snapshot
Here’s a snapshot of where CAM members are at in terms of Green Initiatives.

Waste Management & Sustainable Moving Practices
Cartons, Bins & Moving Supplies
CAM members are rethinking moving materials to reduce waste. Reusable cartons in good condition are broken down and offered free to customers. Members use dedicated plastic bins for office relocations, provide returned supplies for low-income moves, and collect used packing materials for recycling plants. Innovations like HexcelPack—a sustainable alternative to plastic bubble wrap—are gaining traction, alongside reusable padding. Post-move customer pick-up services ensure materials like cardboard and packing supplies are diverted from landfills.
Company Recycling Programs
Recycling is a cornerstone of CAM member initiatives. Some members maintain clearly marked bins for paper, plastic, and cardboard, with some offering gift cards to incentivize recycling. Partnerships with junk bin businesses ensure proper disposal or having dedicated dumpsters in the yard to streamline material separation are ways that some members are prioritizing recyclables and minimizing trips to the landfill.
Donations
Members are redirecting usable items from decommissions, office and commercial projects to communities in need. Partnerships with Habitat for Humanity, local food banks and women’s shelters allow these goods to find second lives. Members indicated that they donate used blankets and cartons in good condition to groups in need.
Waste Disposal
Waste is returned to warehouses for proper management, often through partnerships with Waste Management. This ensures compliance with environmental standards and reduces the ecological footprint of moving operations.
Driving & Transportation
Fuel efficiency and route optimization are key. Members use quad-cab vehicles to reduce fuel consumption and employ GPS systems to monitor driver performance. Carpooling is also employed by some members. These tools help minimize idle time and optimize routes, cutting emissions and operational costs. However, there is no way to optimize routes with road construction.
Office Practices
CAM members’ offices are embracing sustainability through energy-efficient upgrades. LED lighting, smart thermostats, and solar panels reduce electricity use, while paperless workflows and e-signature tools like DocuSign slash paper waste. Reusable mugs and utensils replace single-use plastics, and e-waste recycling programs ensure responsible disposal of electronics. Additional measures include reducing HVAC and lighting usage during off-hours.
Other Comments
“We are unaware of any programs for recycling plastic bags and used tape. It is a huge waste, and we would love to have a way to recycle those items.”
“There aren't enough companies that provide products like eco-friendly packing materials or eco-friendly trucks. In transportation, it is difficult to be eco-friendly.”
Editor’s note: If you have suggestions for these folks, please send them along to CAM.
Green Winner |

The winner of the $50 gift card randomly drawn from respondents in our “CAM Quickie” survey was Jurgen Von Kaiser of E&V Moving Solutions. Congratulations, Jurgen. |

“Reducing your carbon footprint is a mandate that many Canadian organizations are looking to implement” Jeff Herszkowicz of FarrellPack tells CAM. “As a supplier, we are bringing in products that are viable, sustainable and recyclable,” continues Jeff. One of their products "HexcelPack" is a replacement for plastic bubble. “One skid of Hexcelwrap is equivalent to half a 53' trailer full of plastic bubble. That's an environmental win in my mind!” says Herszkowicz. |
|
|
HexcelWrap offers superior protection compared to traditional bubble, with the added benefits of being 100% recyclable, biodegradable, and compostable. Its slit-sheet design grabs and interlocks items, preventing movement within boxes—a leading cause of damage during transit.
Made from 100% PEFC-certified Canadian Kraft paper, HexcelWrap naturally breaks down, avoiding the environmental harm caused by plastic, which can linger in landfills for centuries. The core is designed for easy end-of-roll dispensing, simplifying packaging and eliminating the need for taping.

The Benefits of Employee Development
Your employees are the lifeblood of your organization. Their knowledge and expertise are crucial to your company’s success and it takes time and effort to amass both. The good news is that most employees are willing — even eager — to learn and grow professionally.
Investing in learning programs can help your organization and team members enjoy the many benefits of employee development.
8. Maintaining compliance and mitigating risk
A comprehensive employee development program may include compliance and risk management training, especially when required by law. For example, U.S. healthcare workers who handle protected health information must undergo training to keep their patients’ healthcare data safe and to ensure HIPAA compliance.
Other programs — such as safety, ethics, and DEI training — may be in place to mitigate risk to employees and to the organization. For example, anti-racism training can help ensure a safe, inclusive environment for a diverse team, while also mitigating the risk of discrimination claims and reputational damage.
Every organization will have their own seat of ethical standards and legal obligations, so the specific benefits of compliance and risk mitigation training can vary.
Stay tuned for part 9 on improving business performance coming in the next issue.

Unconscious Bias at Work: How to Recognize, Challenge, and Overcome It
LinkedIn Learning Blog, March 24, 2025
Unconscious bias is defined as “biases that you hold that are rooted in societal normalities — things that you were taught when you were younger, things that you learn in media, things that you learn from your parents. Oftentimes, they are behind-the-scenes thoughts.”
At work, unconscious bias can shape how we interact with others, how we evaluate performance, and even who we choose to hire. Maybe we assume one person is more “ready” for promotion over another, based on factors unrelated to actual performance. Or perhaps we gravitate toward hiring someone who feels like a “culture fit” (more on this later) without questioning what that means. While racism and sexism are illegal, bias still operates beneath the surface, influencing decisions without our awareness.
So how do we recognize and disrupt unconscious bias — whether in others, in ourselves, or when we’re on the receiving end of it?
