Rethinking Speed and Safety
I’m not a fan of Highway 402 in Ontario, which links Sarnia with London, and I don’t enjoy the 401 either. For me, driving the 402 is an endless, monotonous stretch that leaves me desperate for caffeine during that final hour home—no matter what time it is. When I hit the “25 km to Sarnia” sign, I know focus will be a struggle.
The 401, on the other hand, is pure chaos. Taking your eyes off the road for even a few seconds isn’t an option. When navigating the tangle of express and collector lanes around Pearson Airport, my heart rate (as tracked by my Oura ring) always spikes. Seriously, hats off to anyone who drives the 401 for a living—you have my respect. |
|
|
My biggest issue, aside from the sheer number and diversity of vehicles, is the speed. I’ve found myself driving at 130-140 km/h just to keep up with the flow in my lane. It’s not only nerve-wracking but genuinely dangerous. I hate driving that fast, but sticking to the posted speed limit can make you a moving hazard among much faster traffic, especially with a transport truck in your rear-view mirror.
That’s why I appreciate how China organizes some of its expressways, especially in major cities. They often have clear lane-specific speed limits: higher for the leftmost lane (100-120 km/h), lower for the middle (90-100 km/h), and slowest for the right (80-90 km/h). Wouldn’t it be simpler if we could just pick a lane, set cruise control, and not have to worry about being swept along at reckless speeds?
|
 |
Last month, Road Safety at Work (RSAW) sent out their new “Speeding Prevention Tool Kit.” The kit highlights that speeding, like all aggressive driving, is a choice—and one with far more risks than benefits. They note that speeding both worsens crash outcomes and reduces vehicle safety feature effectiveness. It shortens reaction time, increases stopping distance, and makes losing control easier, often turning near-misses into crashes.
Aside from the risk of crashes and injuries, speeding tickets and penalty points add up quickly: up to $483 in BC and, in Ontario, $180 and 4 demerit points for 130 km/h in a 100 zone.
Worse, if your drivers crash while speeding, your organization could face major legal and financial consequences, not to mention the reputational hit even without a crash.
I plan to explore RSAW’s toolkit, learn my speeding triggers, and try to keep taking the train to Toronto whenever I can.
Safe driving, everyone!

Speeding is a leading factor in crashes and fatalities. It’s also preventable. This new Speeding Prevention Tool Kit from CAM partner Road Safety at Work will help employers and drivers break the habit. Its practical resources include questions you can use to start a conversation about speeding, and a template for setting driving expectations. You can also test your knowledge about speeding myths and why you can be ticketed for doing the speed limit. |

Webinar 2508 - Advanced Guide to Estimating (And How to Troubleshoot When We Miss) |
When: Thursday, September 11, 2025, 1 p.m. ET
Cost: Free to CAM members / $30 for non-members
Take your estimating skills to the next level with “Advanced Guide to Estimating (and How to Troubleshoot When We Miss).” Peter McCullough of Raven Research will tackle the complexities of estimating multi-truck and multi-day jobs, focusing on both large residential moves (like two trucks and six crew members, or jobs requiring loading on one day and delivery on another) and office relocations, which often carry similar challenges.
You’ll learn practical strategies for:
· Building accurate estimates for complex, multi-phase moves
· Understanding how residential challenges translate to office moving scenarios
· Navigating logistical variables that can turn a straightforward job into a multi-truck or multi-day project
Plus, we’ll dedicate time to customer service best practices for when estimates go wrong. Discover effective troubleshooting strategies, learn why starting from the cube sheet is critical, and see how to recover quickly and professionally when the numbers don’t work out as planned. This is your essential guide for making (and correcting) tricky estimates with confidence.

The Growing Threat of AI-Generated Fake Receipts in Moving Claims
July 2, 2025, courtesy of Claims Prevention & Procedure Council
With the rise of advanced AI tools like ChatGPT, the insurance industry is facing a new type of fraud: the use of AI-generated fake receipts to support illegitimate claims. While AI can streamline processes and improve customer service, it also presents new opportunities for fraudulent activity, particularly in the area of contents and moving claims.
Claims professionals should be on alert for signs that a receipt may be fabricated:
Inconsistent formatting – Unusual fonts, spacing, or alignment not typically seen in official store receipts
Mathematical errors – Totals, taxes, or subtotals that don’t calculate correctly
Generic item descriptions – Vague terms like “merchandise” or “electronics” instead of specific brand names and models
Fake or outdated store details – Nonexistent addresses, incorrect phone numbers, or outdated logos
Lack of purchase trail – No supporting documentation such as order confirmations, credit card statements, or tracking numbers
For more information about what to look out for, click here.
