Hushing the Hustle

I spent a lot of time on the train in England last month, and like a ferry ride across Halifax Harbour, I find riding the rails to be a relaxing escape.  This was a blessing, as the trip itself was stressful.  Navigating housing and banking bureaucracy with my daughter was a major challenge.  What would take 2–3 days to arrange in Canada stretched into more than three weeks in the UK, given its housing crisis and landlord protections.  She finally got the keys, and we moved her in and accepted her furniture deliveries on Saturday.  I left at 6 am on Sunday for the twice rearranged flight home on Sunday.

I always tidy my home before leaving so I return to order after an exhausting trip.  Opening my door at 5 AM after a long drive and not facing the clutter of the past few months—when my daughter transitioned from China to England in my living room—was a joy.

Ironically, one of the first messages in my inbox was from a CAM supporter sharing an article on “Home Hushing,” a new trend focused on reducing visual clutter as a form of self-care.  The concept is about creating calm, whether temporarily or more permanently, by intentionally stripping spaces back and rebuilding them with balance in mind.

I thought it worth sharing, since our work often involves guiding clients through chaotic transitions that can follow us home, too.  As Colette Robichaud, who shared the article with me, wisely noted: “It is nice to have our homes be a haven for recharging and not just a reminder of an ever-growing to-do list.” As peak season winds down, perhaps trying a little home (or office) hushing could give us the reset we need.

While I’m already missing train commutes in London, I’m soon heading by train to Kingston to finalize plans for our private Kingston Penitentiary tour, as well as other activities, at conference time.  It’s a lovely ride from Toronto—and I hope you’ll be on board with us in November!

The Tranquil Art of Home Hushing

The psychology behind reducing visual clutter as self-care

“Your home should whisper calm, not shout chaos.”

At its heart, home hushing is about creating calmer, quieter spaces by reducing visual and sensory clutter.  Think fewer objects competing for your attention, softer colors, and rooms that feel like a deep breath instead of a long to-do list.

It’s a decluttering method that involves temporarily removing nonessential items from a room for 24 hours and then intentionally deciding what returns—helping people experience the calm of a space before filling it back up.

The short article covers the psychological benefits of home hushing and how to get started.  Home hushing isn’t about stripping away joy.  It’s about creating a supportive backdrop that lets you live, work, and rest at your best.

US Report on Global Household Goods Contract

Brian Limperopulos, IAM, September 11, 2025

The US Government Accountability Office (GAO) has just published their report on DoD's management and oversight of the Global Household Goods Contract (GHC).
According to the GAO, "TRANSCOM did not have sufficient, comprehensive information about GHC: (1) capacity, (2) performance, and (3) costs to effectively manage risks and oversee contract implementation."

As Brian Limperopulos noted in a LinkedIn post, “The International Association of Movers (IAM) have long argued that the Global Household Goods Contract procurement method is flawed and will not deliver the results DoD is looking for because it fails to grapple with the structure and dynamics of the moving industry. IAM will continue to advocate for DoD to work with industry collaboratively and to adapt as well as modernize its existing tender of service program.”
