MCAC NEWS

FROM DREW’S DESK...

As we move into June, I want to take a moment to recognize the continued dedication and professionalism of our members across Saskatchewan. The construction season is now in full swing, bringing new opportunities, ongoing challenges, and important milestones for our industry.

Saskatchewan’s construction sector continues to show resilience, particularly in commercial, institutional, and infrastructure projects. However, workforce challenges remain our most significant hurdle. Like many provinces, we face an aging workforce and strong competition for skilled tradespeople. MCAS is committed to supporting our members through targeted training initiatives, apprenticeship promotion, and collaboration with training partners to help build the next generation of mechanical professionals.

Thank you to our members. Your continued support, participation in events, and feedback help make MCAS a stronger association. Whether you’re gearing up for busy summer projects, sending crews to our upcoming training sessions, or joining us on the golf course later this month, your involvement is what drives our success.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the Ron Young Memorial Golf Tournament on June 18th and at our LobsterFEST event on June 24th, as well as at other MCAS events throughout the year.

SPOTLIGHT ON BENEFITS

It’s June and finally time get outside and enjoy some wonderful Saskatchewan weather. For the three weeks it lasts anyway. It is, however, the perfect time to do a mid-year check-up on your benefits plan. Here are some quick tips to give your benefits plan a quick check up.

  • Check your bill. Are all the right employees on your plan? Have all of the new spouses or babies been added?

  • Are all employees’ salaries up to date? This is extremely important, especially if you have life or disability insurance on your plan. If an employee were to pass away or become disabled, the insurance carrier would look at the salary that they have on file.

  • Have your employees signed up for online access? Employees can download a smartphone app and have easy access to submit claims.

  • Do you have an extension of benefits policy? With benefits being cost shared between the employee and the employer do you have a plan for paying the employer portion if an employee becomes disabled?  How long will you have them remain on your plan?

  • When is the last time you had an employee benefits education session? We have found that the more that employees understand how to get the most out of their plan, the more value they get from it, and from your providing it to them.

Asking yourself the above questions at least once a year is a great way to stay on top of your benefits program and to catch and prevent any problems before they happen.
