Game on! |
This time next month I will already be hunkered down at the Hilton Toronto Airport working with onsite staff to finalize menus, room layouts and go over the conference timing and set-up right down to water and coffee stations. And this year – most important – getting TV feeds confirmed for the Grey Cup broadcast on opening Sunday.
Years of planning go into the annual conference and trade show and, believe it or not, Marian and I are already going over the budget and timing for Kingston 2025 and even discussing venue sites in Richmond BC in 2026. But there will be more on that later.

I can honestly say that I’ve never been more excited for a CAM conference than I am for this year. This past year, we had time away from scammers to do a deep dive into what issues were near and dear to you that will help you survive and thrive our challenging industry.
We have had great topics and wonderful speakers in the past, but this year I think the conference committee has got it right – every topic we have at the conference is going to be helpful to your moving company whether you are running two trucks or have 100.
We’ve had a chance to work with some of the speakers throughout the year and provide five pre-conference webinars and several information pieces on sales, cyber security, growth opportunities, and insurance implications depending on what moving services you provide.
We’ve just added a morning block on Tuesday that’s focussed on social media and utilizing artificial intelligence for many tasks in moving. These may not be something that you do now, but the enthusiasm for these topics from our speakers will have you more willing to venture forth into dimensions currently unknown to embrace these necessary business tools.
Of course, having Brian Limperopulos kicking off the discussion is going to be great. As the International Association of Movers President, Brian has travelled the world for many years attending countless meetings and conferences and is the definition of “boots on the ground.” Not only is IAM on top of all things international, but they have also worked hard over the last four or five years developing a strong membership base domestically and are very involved with the challenges that American movers are currently dealing with. He’s a very engaging speaker and you’ll enjoy listening to what he has to say. Plus, he’s just a fun guy to hang out with.
I’m really looking forward to our opening reception. We have never had to compete with the Grey Cup game before. But no matter! We’re going to embrace it. With Mover One Group’s support, we’re going to have a tailgate party complete with food stations put together by last year’s Grey Cup Chef, Rene. A free-flowing evening, there will be games and other fun activities and attendees can watch the game, or just hang out in one of our adjoining conference spaces. You can even get a head-start on achieving your quest for the “super stocking” by checking out our exhibitors.
And the best part? We’re flexible! If you can’t come to the whole conference, you can come on Sunday night and meet and hang out with your fellow movers and suppliers. And bring your favourite football jersey with you. You’ll fit right in. Yes, we’ll even accept gear from the other type of football.
I haven’t even mentioned the CAM Awards dinner. The Class of 2024 is outstanding, and it will be a wonderful night to celebrate them and our industry. Since 2001, we have been recognizing industry leaders who have distinguished themselves for their contribution to the industry and the association. The dinner is fabulous, the camaraderie top-notch, and we all clean up nice too!
We haven’t been in the Toronto area for eight years and won’t be back until at least 2029. If you work in the GTA, we’re in your backyard. Now’s your chance to be more involved in and support your trade association. If it’s only a few hours on Sunday night, a day you can spare, or the whole conference, you won’t regret it.

How To Grow Your Moving Company Strategically
Peter McCullough, Principal, Raven Research
As business owners we all want to grow our companies but growth for growth’s sake can be dangerous to your bottom line. Growth should be strategic. Whether expansion comes from organic revenue growth through data-driven sales management; through adding new product lines to your household goods division like local, long distance, and international; entering into the white glove markets of High-Value Products, final mile delivery, or e-commerce fulfillment; expanding by merger or acquisition, or by opening net new locations across the country.
Whatever growth path your business takes, it should have a strategic direction. |
