President’s Message

Respect where it’s due. Always.

With Labour Day and National Truck Driver Appreciation Week (September 7-13) coming up, I can’t think of a better time to tip our hats to the hardest-working people I know.

After 20 years of working with moving crews and drivers, I’ve seen it all—the sweat, the laughs, the teamwork, and yes, the occasional (well-deserved) eyeroll when “someone” forgets to mention that the “short walk” from the truck included three flights of stairs and navigating a winding pathway through a garden full of gnome statues. (True story.)

As a sales gal, I always tried to make life a little smoother for the crews—sending detailed job info (with pics!), grabbing a coffee or cold water for them mid-day, or handing them a homemade cookie or my famous date squares when they came back dusty and tired.  It built trust.

They knew I respected what they did, and that if I screwed something up, they could come straight to me, so we could figure it out together and make the next job better.  They forgave me about the gnomes, but they never let me forget it.  Hence the customer’s watering can that was donated to the boys for me as a joke.  A can that has made 6 moves with me and that I will always keep... a daily reminder that details matter.

These folks aren’t just moving boxes from A to B.  Every move is a fresh set of challenges, and our crews face each one with a combination of strength, patience, good humour, and more than a little problem-solving.

After all, they are managing customers who may be on the edge of a meltdown because their lives are literally in cardboard boxes.

Movers are physical athletes, logistical pros, customer service reps, and—on many days—full-time therapists with a healthy sense of humour (and the occasional bit of sarcasm – used wisely, of course).

And while many truck drivers get to stand aside while a forklift loads 22 pallets onto their trailers, in our drivers’ world, it's hands-on.

Every. Single. Day.

Our drivers are Tetris pros, teachers to the rookies, dog-petters, and sometimes, family-counsellor-for-the-day.  They deal with tight stairs, narrow elevators, weird schedule changes, and paperwork (digital or not) that never seems to end.

In our industry it takes all of us. T he front-line crew, the bookkeepers, customer service reps, dispatch, sales, the receptionists, even the social media experts.  And when we work as a team, with mutual respect, good humour, and a shared goal, it all just clicks.

So, this September, whether you're firing up the grill for Labour Day or catching a mover doing a perfect pivot around a tight corner with a massive couch—take a minute to say thanks.

Continued respect. Always.

September 11, 2025 - Webinar 2508 - Advanced Guide to Estimating (And How to Troubleshoot When We Miss)

When:    Thursday, September 11, 2025, 1 p.m. ET
Cost:    Free to CAM members / $30 for non-members

Take your estimating skills to the next level with “Advanced Guide to Estimating (and How to Troubleshoot When We Miss).”  Peter McCullough of Raven Research will tackle the complexities of estimating multi-truck and multi-day jobs, focusing on both large residential moves (like two trucks and six crew members, or jobs requiring loading on one day and delivery on another) and office relocations, which often carry similar challenges.

You’ll learn practical strategies for:

  • Building accurate estimates for complex, multi-phase moves

  • Understanding how residential challenges translate to office moving scenarios

  • Navigating logistical variables that can turn a straightforward job into a multi-truck or multi-day project

Plus, we’ll dedicate time to customer service best practices for when estimates go wrong. Discover effective troubleshooting strategies, learn why starting from the cube sheet is critical, and see how to recover quickly and professionally when the numbers don’t work out as planned. This is your essential guide for making (and correcting) tricky estimates with confidence.

BC Moving Industry Golf Tournament a Huge Success

On Sunday, August 10th, the BC moving industry came together with friends, partners and supporters for a day of golf, giving and great company.

“Thank you for making our 2nd Annual Moving Industry Golf Tournament a huge success,” says Mark Hirschi of Salmon’s Moving and organizer of the tournament. “We’re proud to say we picked the hottest day in all of Canada for the tournament, and every single player rose to the challenge, proving that great company and a good cause can outshine even the summer heat. Thanks to your generosity, we raised $1,550 for @backpackbuddiesbc, helping to ensure local kids have the food they need when school is out.”

“This tournament was about more than golf,” says Mark.  “It was about meeting new people, making new friends, and building stronger connections in our industry and community.”
