That Elephant in the Room I was writing some social media posts this past week to stack up our queue on our Hootsuite planner. Anyone who manages their company’s social media accounts knows just how long this task takes. Finding new and different ways to say the same things all the time can test even the best media planner. I was happy for this coming month though … “spring ahead” time change, St. Patrick’s Day, and the first day of Spring are all posts I’ve been setting up. All very positive non-winter messages.

President's Message

That Elephant in the Room

I was writing some social media posts this past week to stack up our queue on our Hootsuite planner.

But it got me thinking … it’s “go time” for preparing for busy season.  In CAMs case, we’re in the middle of ours because it’s basically a three-month period between the beginning of February until the end of April, when we organize the next golf tournament and the annual conference, prepare for our BBB-partnered May is Moving Month awareness campaign and design a new campaign with several CAM members for Moving Seniors Safely, coming up in a month’s time.

Suppliers are busy right now as well.  I’ve been talking to several and they are getting their warehouses stocked up with supplies for their clients, so they have enough uniforms, cardboard boxes, packing supplies, floor runners, and the list goes on.  Only time will tell how this season is going to work out for all our mover and supplier members over the next few weeks and months with the constant and ever-changing tariff threats from the ‘Head Elephant’ in the USA.  All we can do is be informed and ready.  You’ll see some potential challenges to keep your eye on listed below.

Are you prepared?  As we roll into Spring, it’s time to start getting staff hired, trained, and ready for, what my moving company used to refer to as, “silly season”.

I wanted to remind you that CAM has several resources to help you.  Please take a moment to head over to our education webpage. There you will find a bunch of videos on a wide range of topics that might be of interest to you.  As well, we have our Training for Helpers and Packing & Unpacking instructional videos available.  These are great videos for your sales staff to watch too as it will give them better understanding of what happens on a move.  Remember, as part of your membership these videos are all free of charge for all your staff to review.

We also have the Canadian Professional Movers Course which has produced over 500 graduates since its inception.  Students typically take about two months to complete the course, although it can be completed in a weekend…in fact, I did it in 4 days.  It really is for anyone.  Graduates can then proudly display the CPM designation on their business cards and sales tools.  There’s more to read about this below.

So, as we all get ready for moving season – CAM will make sure that we continue to promote the association as THE place to find trusted and reliable movers and we can send inquiries and referrals your way.

And no matter how that elephant tries to step on us, let’s continue to support each other as we prepare for another challenging peak season.  We can do this!!!

Peak Season Preparedness

Canadian Association of Movers, February 14, 2025

Time to prepare!

The peak moving season, from June to August, is coming fast.  Here’s CAM’s advice to moving companies to help prepare:

1.    Start hiring early: Recruit and train additional staff, including part-time labour, to meet increased demand.

2.    Ensure crew readiness: Review the health and capabilities of your existing crew to maintain high-quality service.

3.    Check and maintain equipment: Inspect trucks and equipment to prevent breakdowns or shortages during busy periods.

4.    Order your supplies: Contact your CAM suppliers to shore up your moving supplies, uniforms, etc. in case of future supply shortages.

5.    Prepare your warehouse: Organize, clean and inspect your warehouse and storage area.

6.    Implement efficient software: Automate processes with reliable software to streamline operations and handle increased workload.

7.    Prepare peak season education: Get your social media planned and scheduled so you don’t need to worry about it when you’re busy.  Be ready to inform clients about the challenges of peak season moving and set realistic expectations.

8.    Optimize pricing strategies: Consider offering discounts for off-peak times or implementing surge pricing during high-demand periods.

9.    Enhance customer communication: Develop a system for frequent updates and clear communication with clients to manage expectations.

10.    Plan for contingencies: Establish backup plans and partnerships with other CAM members to handle overflow.

CAM can help with some of these preparations by providing educational information, some social media suggestions and connecting you with fellow movers.

How Tariffs Could Affect Your Moving Business

Canadian Association of Movers, February 14, 2025

It’s been a roller coaster month and highly emotional for many of our members.  Emotion and national pride aside, we need to be prepared for what’s coming.  The American tariffs and subsequent Canadian counter-tariffs are looming and likely to have significant impacts on moving companies operating in Canada.

Here are some things you need to keep your eye on.

•    Higher prices for moving supplies: Items like packing materials and moving equipment imported from the U.S. may become more expensive.

•    Weakened Canadian Dollar: As of February 14, 2025, $1 Canadian is worth approximately $0.705 USD. TD Economics suggests it could drop to as low as 65 U.S. cents with the tariffs. This will have negative impacts on buying anything in USD, but those who get paid in USD will benefit.

•    Increased costs for replacement goods: If moving companies need to replace damaged items, the cost of imported household goods will be higher.

•    Impact on vehicle costs: The second wave of tariffs is expected to include passenger vehicles and trucks, which may increase costs for moving companies that need to purchase or maintain their fleet.

•    Increased fuel costs:  The tariffs could lead to decreased Canadian oil exports to the U.S., potentially reducing domestic production and driving up gas and diesel prices in Canada.  As well, operating your trucks in the U.S. will also cost you more as it is predicted that U.S. gas and diesel prices could rise by 15 cents per gallon if the 10% tariff on Canadian energy imports is implemented.

•    Potential decrease in cross-border moves: The tariffs may discourage some Canadians from moving to the U.S., potentially reducing business for international or cross-border moving companies.

•    Consumer price sensitivity:  After the GST holiday and with the knowledge that prices are going to go up, consumers are going to be more price sensitive than they ever have been in our lifetime.

But who knows for certain?  While the full impact remains to be seen, Canadian members should prepare for potential cost increases and consider how to adapt their business strategies in response to these new tariffs.

Promoting Your CAM Membership: A Competitive Edge for Canadian Movers

Canadian Association of Movers, February 14, 2025

In today's "Buy Canadian" climate, your membership in CAM is a powerful tool to differentiate your business from the faceless internet movers and scam operators that don’t have Canadian roots (or even a street address for that matter!).

Here are key points for your sales and marketing teams to consider using to promote your CAM membership and showcase your commitment to quality, Canadian-based moving services:

1. Canadian Roots: Emphasize that as a CAM member, you're part of a Canadian organization founded in 1969, dedicated to supporting and promoting Canadian moving companies.

2. Verified Credibility: CAM membership signifies that your company has undergone a stringent certification process, ensuring high standards of professionalism and ethical conduct.

3.  Quality Assurance: CAM membership requires adherence to a strict code of ethics, ensuring customers receive reliable, high-quality moving services.

3. Easy Verification: Encourage potential customers to verify your CAM membership on www.mover.net, reinforcing your transparency and legitimacy.

4. Local Expertise: Stress your understanding of Canadian regulations, geography, and climate, which online or non-Canadian movers may lack.

5. Industry Leadership: As a CAM member, you have access to the latest industry trends and best practices, ensuring top-quality service for customers.

6. Community Involvement: Showcase your participation in your community by supporting local and Canadian.  That often tips the scales.

Now is the time to shine!

Welcome Colby Kiss to the CAM Board of Directors

CAM is pleased to welcome Colby Kiss to our Board of Directors! With nine years of experience in the moving industry, including owning Total Moving Winnipeg for five years and ownership in Globe Moving and Storage for just over a year, Colby brings valuable expertise in marketing, sales, and operational processes.

Colby's enthusiasm for CAM and his desire to contribute to the growth and professionalism of the Canadian moving industry is evident. He's already actively involved in various associations and business groups in Winnipeg, including CAM, Atlas, BBB, BNI, and Tech Canada, demonstrating a commitment to collaboration and industry advancement. Colby is also in the process of starting a movers’ mastermind in Winnipeg.

There’s no question that his marketing, sales, and operational processes have helped him develop and grow his business, and CAM is looking forward to tapping into that. He is interested in participating on the Conference and Marketing committees, with a vision to enhance communication and support for members and their teams across Canada. "Colby is very active with his social game and super supportive of CAM, as has been evident over the last three years he’s been attending our conferences,” says Nancy Irvine, President of CAM. “We're excited to have Colby's insights and dedication on our Board.”

Movers - Check Your CAM Listing

A quick reminder to check your listing on member directory to ensure that the information our over-10,000-per-month web visitors are reading about your company is correct and up to date.  If you would like to change any of your information,  email Marian  and she’ll make the changes.  Think about adding more details about your services – such as listing your specialties, like piano moving, or in-house relocation or your recycling program – or adding your social media links that tell a story about your activities in the community.  This is all valuable information that could give you an edge in attracting customers to your business.

Something Phishy Going on Here

Long time CAM member Jeff Melanson, General Manager, All World Moving & Storage in Fredericton passed along this email to us to make all CAM members aware of a scam that affects an initial sales prospect.  We agree with Jeff that this is very clever using real addresses and very specific information about what is supposedly being moved.  Please beware.

New Job Opportunities

There are several new job opportunities on our website.  Watch for jobs posted there to see if they fit with your career plans.

CAM’s Professional Training for Your Employees

•    Offer video training for your new helper employees (basic training, packing and unpacking modules).

•    Provide access to an overseas training manual for administrative staff.

How Does it Work?

The training videos are included at no charge as a benefit of membership.

Effective April 1, 2025, the CPM course is subject to a user fee.  Students will require a personal username and password provided by CAM to access the education program modules.  Once set up, students will receive complete program modules consisting of reading, videos, slides and tests, which they can access and study at their own speed.

Canadian Professional Mover Course

Equip your sales team with Canadian Professional Mover (CPM) training, to give them that competitive edge when they are closing sales.

The CPM course was developed jointly by members of CAM and Dalhousie University. It’s regularly updated and is being used by Canada’s leading movers.

The CPM course consists of nine modules:
•    Estimating Procedures
•    Long Distance Moving – Canada (Two modules)
•    Long Distance Moving – Canada/USA/Mexico
•    Local Moving
•    Permanent Storage (Three modules)
•    Office Moving

Students will:
•    complete modules with reading and testing at their own speed;
•    learn about the moving consultant’s role and moving services in Canada;
•    become a Canadian Professional Mover; and
•    receive a certificate and the right to use the CPM graphic on their correspondence and business cards and be able to identify themselves to clients as a Canadian Professional Mover.

The Canadian Professional Movers Course is a valuable educational tool for folks who are new to the industry, as well as for folks who have been around for awhile.  In fact, a 20-year Relocation Consultant found the course “a great refresher” in which they “also learned some new and valuable information.”  The course is only available to employees of a CAM Member.

Sorry, You Have to Stop Apologizing

Colette Robicheau, LinkedIn, July 25, 2024

Executive presence is key to advancing your career and maintaining healthy relationships. One habit that can significantly undermine your presence is over-apologizing. While it’s important to acknowledge mistakes, excessive apologies can diminish your authority and weaken your personal connections.

Apologizing should be reserved for when we truly need to take responsibility for a mistake. When you apologize too often, you inadvertently train others to see you as less competent and more passive.

This article reviews the seven reasons why you need to curb this habit of saying sorry.

Staying Competitive in the Post-Election Marketplace

Leon Johnson, Matco Moving Solutions and CAM Board Member
IAM Portal Magazine, January-February 2025 issue

Are politics becoming too invasive in everyday life? Some might profess they don't believe so, but the fact is, politics and the recent post-election results affect our lives extensively.  Today more than ever, we are becoming increasingly entangled in political agendas of pre- and post-election results.

In Canada, we are fortunate to live in a peaceful and democratic nation. Sharing the longest international land border in the world with the United States has long been beneficial for both countries.

Recently, a different political agenda has started to emerge in the U.S. that will heavily influence a variety of sectors. The impact of this post-election government and its policies will certainly affect domestic and global relocation trends in the future.

Days of Yore

Thanks to CAM’s “historian” Steve Sharpe who sent in this fabulous photo of Tippet-Richardson!  Sadly, we don’t have a date for this, but we can guarantee it wasn’t yesterday!  For those of you who aren’t aware … this is an example of the origin of why that thicker box that you pack plates and glasses in is called a “China Barrel.”

Do you have any photos you’d like to share?  We’d love to see them!  Send them to Marian.

In the fourth segment of our series on growth opportunities in the moving industry, Peter McCullough ran through the basics of the complexity of international moving. Breakdowns and Emergencies: Prepare for the Unexpected

The safety bulletin, Breakdowns and Emergencies: Prepare for the Unexpected, offers some simple strategies your drivers can use to prevent and manage roadside emergencies, including:

•    Performing proper pre-trip inspections
•    Keeping emergency kits, tool kits and first–aid kits fully stocked
•    Using your fleet's preferred roadside assistance and towing teams

Please print, post and share this monthly Safety Bulletin with your drivers to help them stay safe on the road.

The Benefits of Employee Development

Your employees are the lifeblood of your organization. Their knowledge and expertise are crucial to your company’s success and it takes time and effort to amass both.  The good news is that most employees are willing — even eager — to learn and grow professionally.

Investing in learning programs can help your organization and team members enjoy the many benefits of employee development.

3. Addressing skills gaps and future-proofing your organization

Skill sets for jobs have changed by around 25% since 2015 and this number is expected to grow to 65% by 2030. This is creating a significant skills gap, with 75% of employers reporting they can’t find talent with the right mix of skills.

Professional development helps your team members learn the in-demand skills they need to succeed in their current role — and the emerging skills they’ll need to have in the future.

For example, management and leadership skills were among the most in-demand competencies employers sought last year. Nine out of 10 human resource professionals indicated their organization had management skill gaps — and 78% of those were providing internal training to address those gaps.

Upskilling and reskilling benefits your team members, as well as your organization. Employees learn the skills they need to stay relevant in an evolving job market and your organization builds a skilled workforce that’s equipped to navigate future challenges and opportunities. It’s no surprise 89% of L&D pros agree that proactively building employee skills will help navigate the evolving future of work.
