What makes a CAM member? More than luck! |
I’m often asked, “what makes a CAM member different?” In so many ways that answer is obvious – our members, as you know, agree to a higher standard code of ethics. We expect our members to act with fairness and honesty to clients, by not only honouring the terms of the contract but by providing efficient, reliable, high-quality service. Each of our Certified Professional Movers agrees, by signing the Code of Ethics to deliver a moving service that is fair in practice and cost, and certainly professional and safe.
|
|
|
In the moving industry, reputation is paramount. Building trust through excellent service and customer care leads to a long history of success and loyal customers. As the saying goes, "Your reputation precedes you," and in this industry, a strong reputation can make all the difference between success and failure.
But what happens when you know you can’t provide that standard of service? You’ve had a request for a previously reserved date, or you’ve suddenly found yourself swamped with last minute government orders and you need to sub out your currently booked civilian moves for a couple of days because you won’t have the equipment or manpower to do the job? Do you go rent trucks and hire day labourers or do you get another moving company to do the job for you?
Neither is an ideal situation, because hiring day labourers waters down the quality of your front line crews, and subbing out the business could be risky if you aren’t picky about who you get to help. In both cases your reputation can be damaged, and if things go horribly wrong, the reputation of CAM.
We have been working very hard to ensure the public that when they hire a CAM member, they will get that higher standard of service that they are looking for. And the public are getting was CAM is about. That is obvious by the 12,000 hits a month on our website and the over 2,000 inquiries and referrals into the office each year.
When they contact us, they are asking important questions, looking for differentiations between CAM Members A and B versus non-CAM members X, Y and Z. There have been a few instances where a CAM member has subbed out their work to a non-CAM member with somewhat disastrous results.
For that reason, the Board of Directors revised the Movers Code of Ethics to include a requirement that you refer or sub out any CAM leads you can’t handle yourself to another CAM member when possible.
Not sure where to look? The most popular page on our website is www.mover.net/member-directory. Not only is it used by consumers to check and see if the mover they are contemplating using is a CAM member, but association members are also going there to look up names of fellow members. Also very popular is the www.mover.net/find-a-mover link. All you do is pop in the postal code and up pops a list of CAM members within 100 km. We’d also be pleased to provide you with a contact list of all CAM members. Just contact the national office at admin@mover.net or 1-866-860-0065.
We sincerely hope you will take that request to promise. I’m sure every one of us wants to have a great summer with the best possible service our members can give. And who knows? You just might make a solid connection for future work.
We’re stronger when we work together.

Shining as a Certified Professional Mover
Canadian Association of Movers, March 11, 2025 |
|
|
Reputation plays a crucial role in both our business and personal lives, significantly influencing how others perceive and interact with us. This is particularly true in the moving industry, where customers rely heavily on trust, reliability, and professionalism when selecting their moving company. |
|
|
Build a Strong Reputation
A solid reputation is built over time through:
1. Consistent actions
2. Accountability
3. Positive treatment of others
People tend to prefer doing business with those they know, like, and trust. This preference often leads to:
• Customer loyalty
• Repeat business
• Referral partnerships
A strong reputation will set a company apart from its competitors. It can even attract top talent to your company, as people are drawn to successful teams with strong values and positive work cultures.
Your Reputation in the Moving Industry
In the moving industry, reputation is particularly critical. Consumers entrust movers with all their valuable possessions, which often hold significant emotional and financial value. A strong reputation, partnered with your CAM certification, reassures customers that their belongings will be handled with care and professionalism.
Positive online reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations, as well as positive and engaging social media posts, are helping moving companies stand out in a competitive market. It goes without saying that customers are more inclined to choose a moving company with high ratings and compelling testimonials.
Overcome Industry Challenges
We know that the moving industry often faces negative press due to rogue operators and bad actors, making consumers cautious. A strong positive reputation and an association with CAM helps our legitimate movers differentiate themselves from scam operators who are known for overcharging, mishandling belongings and holding possessions "hostage."
• Engage with the consumer through social media
• Participate in community events
• Promote your CAM membership
By maintaining integrity, transparency, promoting successes through 5-star reviews, having positive and engaging social media posts, as well as a strong community presence, reputable moving companies like you can continue to raise industry standards.

As Canada faces a "silver tsunami" with a projected 68% growth in the senior population over the next two decades, CAM and the Canadian Association of Retired Persons (CARP) have joined forces for the 4th year to raise awareness about the challenges seniors face during relocation, including managing emotional stress, involvement of the family or an advocate, and the importance of choosing a trusted mover.
Together, we are providing practical tips and insights through information sessions and online resources to help seniors, and their families, manage the moving process effectively.
The Moving Seniors Safely (MSS) campaign offers several key benefits to seniors and their families:
• Proactive Planning: The campaign encourages seniors to be proactive in planning their moves, including researching future living options, communicating with loved ones, and organizing belongings. • Awareness of Moving Scams: It raises awareness about common moving scams, helping seniors avoid financial risks by identifying red flags such as low-ball pricing and large upfront payments. • Access to Reliable Movers: The campaign connects seniors with trusted and reliable moving companies through CAM, ensuring safe and secure relocation experiences. • Emotional Support: It provides emotional support and resources, acknowledging the emotional challenges of downsizing and moving, offering webinars and counseling to help seniors navigate these transitions. • Comprehensive Resources: The campaign offers a wealth of practical tips and insights through online resources, including Q&A webinars and a dedicated section on the CAM website.
The Moving Seniors Safely promotion will run from March 24-31, 2025, with a live Q&A webinar on Facebook at 2:00 pm on March 26, 2025. This event tends to be very popular and results in a spike in activity on the CAM website with folks researching movers’ sections.
CAM will be posting daily advice on social media and encourage you to share with comments about your own commitment to helping seniors on your pages. We will also be directing folks to our very popular Moving Seniors Safely webpage.
This is by far the most expansive public campaign CAM does and over the next few weeks the MSS page will be reorganized as there is a lot of new content being edited and added. |

Your employees are the lifeblood of your organization. Their knowledge and expertise are crucial to your company’s success and it takes time and effort to amass both. The good news is that most employees are willing — even eager — to learn and grow professionally.
Investing in learning programs can help your organization and team members enjoy the many benefits of employee development.
5. Increasing employee retention
Two out of three employees have considered leaving their job because there aren’t enough opportunities for skills development or internal mobility. Turnover is expensive, especially when you factor in recruiting, onboarding, and lost opportunity costs.
Most organizations (93%) are concerned about retention and “providing learning opportunities” is the No. 1 thing employers are doing to reduce voluntary turnover. Offering development opportunities demonstrates your organization’s commitment to an employee’s long-term success, making your team members more likely to stay. In fact, 94% of employees say they would stay at a company longer if it invested in their professional development.
Rewarding employees with career advancement opportunities as they learn new skills can further boost retention. An employee who has made an internal move has a 75% likelihood of staying with their company after two years. This drops to 56% for employees who haven’t changed roles.
Stay tuned for part 6 on boosting employee engagement coming in the next issue.

Should Employers Ban “Bring Your Own AI”?
Individual productivity AI tools, such as conversational agents ChatGPT and digital assistants, are rapidly being adopted by employees in most industries. But due to security risks, some organizations are banning any unsanctioned use of “bring your own AI” (BYOAI).
Because of the “broad nature” of BYOAI tools, employees risk exposing their employers to data loss, intellectual property leakage, copyright infringement, and security breaches.

Welcome Colby Kiss to the CAM Board of Directors |
|
|
CAM is pleased to welcome Colby Kiss to our Board of Directors! With nine years of experience in the moving industry, including owning Total Moving Winnipeg for five years and ownership in Globe Moving and Storage for just over a year, Colby brings valuable expertise in marketing, sales, and operational processes. |
|
|
Colby's enthusiasm for CAM and his desire to contribute to the growth and professionalism of the Canadian moving industry is evident. He's already actively involved in various associations and business groups in Winnipeg, including CAM, Atlas, BBB, BNI, and Tech Canada, demonstrating a commitment to collaboration and industry advancement. Colby is also in the process of starting a movers’ mastermind in Winnipeg.
There’s no question that his marketing, sales, and operational processes have helped him develop and grow his business, and CAM is looking forward to tapping into that. He is interested in participating on the Conference and Marketing committees, with a vision to enhance communication and support for members and their teams across Canada. "Colby is very active with his social game and super supportive of CAM, as has been evident over the last three years he’s been attending our conferences,” says Nancy Irvine, President of CAM. “We're excited to have Colby's insights and dedication on our Board.”

Peak Season Preparedness
Canadian Association of Movers, February 14, 2025 |
|
|
 |
Time to prepare! |
|
The peak moving season, from June to August, is coming fast. Here’s CAM’s advice to moving companies to help prepare:
1. Start hiring early: Recruit and train additional staff, including part-time labour, to meet increased demand.
2. Ensure crew readiness: Review the health and capabilities of your existing crew to maintain high-quality service.
|
|
|
3. Check and maintain equipment: Inspect trucks and equipment to prevent breakdowns or shortages during busy periods.
4. Order your supplies: Contact your CAM suppliers to shore up your moving supplies, uniforms, etc. in case of future supply shortages.
5. Prepare your warehouse: Organize, clean and inspect your warehouse and storage area.
6. Implement efficient software: Automate processes with reliable software to streamline operations and handle increased workload.
7. Prepare peak season education: Get your social media planned and scheduled so you don’t need to worry about it when you’re busy. Be ready to inform clients about the challenges of peak season moving and set realistic expectations.
8. Optimize pricing strategies: Consider offering discounts for off-peak times or implementing surge pricing during high-demand periods.
9. Enhance customer communication: Develop a system for frequent updates and clear communication with clients to manage expectations.
10. Plan for contingencies: Establish backup plans and partnerships with other CAM members to handle overflow.
CAM can help with some of these preparations by providing educational information, some social media suggestions and connecting you with fellow movers.

How Tariffs Could Affect Your Moving Business
Canadian Association of Movers, February 14, 2025 |
|
|
It’s been a roller coaster month and highly emotional for many of our members. Emotion and national pride aside, we need to be prepared for what’s coming. The American tariffs and subsequent Canadian counter-tariffs are looming and likely to have significant impacts on moving companies operating in Canada.
Here are some things you need to keep your eye on.
• Higher prices for moving supplies: Items like packing materials and moving equipment imported from the U.S. may become more expensive.
|
|
|
• Weakened Canadian Dollar: As of February 14, 2025, $1 Canadian is worth approximately $0.705 USD. TD Economics suggests it could drop to as low as 65 U.S. cents with the tariffs. This will have negative impacts on buying anything in USD, but those who get paid in USD will benefit.
• Increased costs for replacement goods: If moving companies need to replace damaged items, the cost of imported household goods will be higher.
• Impact on vehicle costs: The second wave of tariffs is expected to include passenger vehicles and trucks, which may increase costs for moving companies that need to purchase or maintain their fleet.
• Increased fuel costs: The tariffs could lead to decreased Canadian oil exports to the U.S., potentially reducing domestic production and driving up gas and diesel prices in Canada. As well, operating your trucks in the U.S. will also cost you more as it is predicted that U.S. gas and diesel prices could rise by 15 cents per gallon if the 10% tariff on Canadian energy imports is implemented.
• Potential decrease in cross-border moves: The tariffs may discourage some Canadians from moving to the U.S., potentially reducing business for international or cross-border moving companies.
• Consumer price sensitivity: After the GST holiday and with the knowledge that prices are going to go up, consumers are going to be more price sensitive than they ever have been in our lifetime.
But who knows for certain? While the full impact remains to be seen, Canadian members should prepare for potential cost increases and consider how to adapt their business strategies in response to these new tariffs.

Promoting Your CAM Membership: A Competitive Edge for Canadian Movers
Canadian Association of Movers, February 14, 2025 |
|
|
In today's "Buy Canadian" climate, your membership in CAM is a powerful tool to differentiate your business from the faceless internet movers and scam operators that don’t have Canadian roots (or even a street address for that matter!).
Here are key points for your sales and marketing teams to consider using to promote your CAM membership and showcase your commitment to quality, Canadian-based moving services:
|
|
|
1. Canadian Roots: Emphasize that as a CAM member, you're part of a Canadian organization founded in 1969, dedicated to supporting and promoting Canadian moving companies.
2. Verified Credibility: CAM membership signifies that your company has undergone a stringent certification process, ensuring high standards of professionalism and ethical conduct.
3. Quality Assurance: CAM membership requires adherence to a strict code of ethics, ensuring customers receive reliable, high-quality moving services.
3. Easy Verification: Encourage potential customers to verify your CAM membership on www.mover.net, reinforcing your transparency and legitimacy.
4. Local Expertise: Stress your understanding of Canadian regulations, geography, and climate, which online or non-Canadian movers may lack.
5. Industry Leadership: As a CAM member, you have access to the latest industry trends and best practices, ensuring top-quality service for customers.
6. Community Involvement: Showcase your participation in your community by supporting local and Canadian. That often tips the scales.
Now is the time to shine!

The Benefits of Employee Development
Your employees are the lifeblood of your organization. Their knowledge and expertise are crucial to your company’s success and it takes time and effort to amass both. The good news is that most employees are willing — even eager — to learn and grow professionally.
Investing in learning programs can help your organization and team members enjoy the many benefits of employee development.
4. Enhancing Employee Performance
One of the primary benefits of employee development is the improvement in individual and team performance.
Learning opportunities enable your team members to acquire new skills and knowledge so they can perform their roles more effectively and efficiently. Whether they’re learning new technologies, refining their time management skills, or staying current with industry trends, your employees can move toward their full potential by leaning into development opportunities.
A well-designed employee development program aligns individual goals with business goals to ensure mutual success. When employees see the impact development can have on their career growth, they’re more motivated to produce higher quality work that contributes to organizational objectives.
Stay tuned for part 5 on increasing employee retention coming in the next issue.

Sorry, You Have to Stop Apologizing
Colette Robicheau, LinkedIn, July 25, 2024
Executive presence is key to advancing your career and maintaining healthy relationships. One habit that can significantly undermine your presence is over-apologizing. While it’s important to acknowledge mistakes, excessive apologies can diminish your authority and weaken your personal connections.
Apologizing should be reserved for when we truly need to take responsibility for a mistake. When you apologize too often, you inadvertently train others to see you as less competent and more passive.
This article reviews the seven reasons why you need to curb this habit of saying sorry.
