Will AI replace movers? No, never. But movers who use AI will replace movers who don’t.
There’s so much talk these days about Artificial Intelligence (AI). You can’t escape it. There’s also a lot of worry and concern about this recent phenomenon. After all, how can you trust something that is growing at an outrageous pace that you really don’t understand? |
|
|
AI started to take shape during WWII, when famous “Enigma” codebreaker Alan Turing and other mathematicians and scientists first began to seriously explore whether computers could think or solve problems like humans. Those explorations continued with slow progression over the next eight decades until the last few years, when things have really taken off.
With all the advances in technology and the explosion of data, AI is now everywhere–from voice assistants in our phones to tools that help businesses make decisions.
AI use cannot be described as anything else but explosive. The number of users worldwide nearly tripled from 116 million in 2020 to over 314 million in 2024. Projections for 2025 show that AI use will increase a further 20% to nearly 379 million before the year is done.
Companies in all kinds of industries are using AI to work smarter and faster, and it’s changing the way we live and work in ways we’re only beginning to understand. Our industry is figuring this out. As Ramiro Quiros mentioned in his last webinar on moving technology, there are already 60+ data and software solutions on the market to help movers increase their efficiency by at least 30%.
Want to increase your efficiency?
Add in AI using everything from chatbots and virtual assistants to handle customer questions instantly, to business trend analysis and forecasting, to document processing, to tracking shipments and optimizing inventory, to detecting fraud and improving risk analysis, to revolutionizing marketing. Hundreds of millions of us are interacting with it every day, whether we are realizing it or not.
CAM uses it regularly to do an in-depth analysis of potential members by scouring the web for reviews and complaints about them. A chore that used to take hours is now done in milliseconds. With a little fact checking to ensure truth and circumstance, we have gained precious hours back into our workday to tackle other projects and move the member onboarding process along more quickly.
There are hundreds of ways to incorporate AI into your business to make you more efficient, productive and visible. Whether you want to or not, you must adapt AI, or you will become uncompetitive in an industry with a limited market in challenging times.
The possibilities for using AI are endless, but so is the risk until we learn more.
In an industry that is built on trust, we are naturally sceptical about things that are different from what we know. Judging by the types of questions that are coming in for Ramiro to address in our webinar on Thursday about practical uses of AI in the moving industry, our members are concerned about its safety and ability to safeguard confidential information.
While we are getting more comfortable with AI, we are still unsure about total surrender to machines that can think like us. Why not join us on Thursday to learn more? Ramiro is unquestionably one of the experts in our field on AI and will be able to impart lots of his own intelligence onto us. Details to register are below.
By the way, my blogs are never written with AI. It’s 100% authentic Nancy and it takes hours (2 hours and 8 minutes on this one to be exact) to research, write and edit. On this, I won’t compromise!

What’s your reputation online? Try This Out! |
|
|
What’s your reputation online? You think you know, but you may be surprised what’s being said about you from remote sources you weren’t even aware of. Take a minute (literally) and do this exercise.
Go into your favourite AI source, for example www.chatgpt.com or, our favourite, www.perplexity.ai and type in:
“Tell me what you know about [insert your company name here] including strengths and weaknesses using reviews, complaints, comments and other resources including media.”
Hit enter.
The results may shed some light on negative aspects of your reputation that you need to work on, or positive aspects that you should be shouting about from the rooftops on social media.
If you’re interested, here’s AI’s unedited analysis of CAM.

The 6 Cornerstone Principles of Effective Listening
Paul Petrone, LinkedIn April 21, 2025
At a time when attention spans are those of a multi-tasking Tse Tse fly, this short LinkedIn article is a good reminder of effective listening.
It won’t be surprising that many of us aren’t great listeners. Often, we fall into a trap of not listening at all or are just waiting for our chance to respond, instead of keeping quiet, paying attention, and listening to understand.
In short, here’s what you can do to hear better. Your customers and coworkers will appreciate it.
1. Give silence and space
2. Maintain eye contact
3. Be mindful of your body language
4. Show empathy by sharing your own missteps and failures
5. Ask open-ended questions
6. When you don’t agree, ask them to help you understand

Proven Tactics to Get Referrals |
|
|
Nothing beats word-of-mouth and referral leads. But what nobody tells you is that doing good work alone won’t get you all the referrals you could be getting. The best movers don’t hope and wait. They have tactics to keep referrals coming, over and over again.
CAM Supplier Supermove sat down with three industry titans who walked them through the real tactics those companies are using today. Supermove has rounded up the best ones for you here.

Your employees are the lifeblood of your organization. Their knowledge and expertise are crucial to your company’s success and it takes time and effort to amass both. The good news is that most employees are willing—even eager—to learn and grow professionally.
Investing in learning programs can help your organization and team members enjoy the many benefits of employee development.
In January, we began a 10-part series to help you elevate your team. It’s time for our final thoughts.
10. Final thoughts: Build an employee development program that works for your team
The benefits and importance of employee development are clear, but only three in 10 employees strongly agree that someone at work encourages their professional growth. This is a missed opportunity to elevate your team and make learning your competitive advantage.
Take the time to build a learning and development program that will help you overcome your business’s challenges and reach your organizational goals — whatever those may be. Prioritize the initiatives that will make the biggest impact and measure your progress so you can continue to justify your investment. Finally, adapt your initiatives as needed to ensure they continue to serve your team over time. Successful development programs need to evolve, just as organizations and teams do.

We always strive to provide a lineup of quality speakers and topics, and 2025 will be no different! Presentations will all be about protection–protecting your business, your reputation, your margins and your drivers. And back, by popular demand–the "Chocolate Talks" roundtables–a CAM favourite where you blind draw your tablemates for an afternoon of discussion about the triumphs and the challenges our industry and our businesses face daily.
There is plenty of time to wind down, relax, and enjoy time with your fellow CAM members. Whether it's tailgating on Sunday night, touring the Kingston Pen on Monday afternoon, catching up with folks that evening at NFP Night, the hotel bar afterwards, or Tuesday's reception and dinner, you'll always find some fine folks to spend time with.
One of the more important aspects of a CAM conference is meeting movers and suppliers outside your circle. Make your connections during any social events, the 20 hours the suppliers are hosting the trade show, or "The Chocolate Talks". The country is represented from coast to coast to coast. Come meet some new contacts!
You can't be at a CAM conference and not have fun! Whether it's in a quirky game with the exhibitors, testing your aim by throwing footballs, striving to win an "Elf Sack", breaking out of jail, or sharing a song with one of the area's most famous entertainers, CAM2025 will be good for a laugh or two.

The Lasting Impact of Mover’s Edge
For 400 editions, Mover’s Edge, CAM’s biweekly newsletter, has chronicled the evolution of the Canadian moving industry. Launched on June 2, 1998, the newsletter’s origins were a vital communication tool for CAM, connecting members to industry news and each other.
Many of the industry’s challenges—pricing, regulation, education, and consumer trust—remain as relevant as they were 27 years ago, but the tools, technology, and scale of engagement have advanced significantly. The newsletter’s role as a connector and information hub has only grown, and its historical content reflects an industry that is both rooted in tradition and the ever-changing landscape of household goods transportation.
Through pandemics, technological revolutions, and shifting consumer expectations, Mover’s Edge has remained a steady, relevant presence. Readership continues to grow monthly with over 2,500 member subscribers. Today, Mover’s Edge boasts a 43%-51% unique open rate for each issue—more than double the industry standard for digital newsletters. We couldn’t work harder or be prouder of each publication, and we thank you for taking a few moments every other Tuesday to peruse the news!

Fridays are tough for some to keep the energy going after a long week. James Messenger, Vice President/Partner of AMJ Campbell – Kitchener-Waterloo & London wanted to have some fun. Recently, he asked all the staff, “what is the one song you would play to pump you up and lift your energy?” He made a list of each person’s song, shared on excel, and put a vote system for a gift card. Sure enough, on the next Friday, he played all the songs through their phone systems. As James posted … it was “a lot of fun to start the day!”
There was lots of variety–everything from AC/DC’s Thunderstruck, Courage by the Hip, Daddy Yankee’s Gasolina to Ridin Dirt by Chamillionaire amongst many others. What was the most requested song? Smack That by Akon.
We’ll be adding those to our playlist as well. Thanks for the idea, James! #workcanbefunalso |

Managing Your Online Reputation... Before it Manages You
Since the pandemic, online shopping and selection of services has increased exponentially. Guess what? So have negative online reviews. Good online reputation management is not only about reacting well to what people say about you, your brand, or your products and services, but also about whether to react at all and, if so, when. Timing is critical, and big companies have whole teams, sentiment analysis software, or even reputation management firms to take care of all this on their behalf. But for a small-to-medium sized business, this work usually falls to you and your team. |

With Growth of AI Assistants, Employers Must Focus On Ethics, Says Expert
HR Reporter, March 26, 2025
'The technology is emerging so quickly and decisions are being made so quickly that we need to get in front of them before they cause harm.'
Artificial intelligence (AI) assistants will soon be available to many workers, and employers must urgently establish ethical guidelines around their use, according to one Canadian academic.
“We need ethical guidelines because the technology is emerging so quickly and decisions are being made so quickly that we need to get in front of them before they cause harm,” says Isabel Pedersen, professor in the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities, and firector of the Digital Life Institute, at Ontario Tech University.
“And the harm could be to individuals.”
As we navigate this new world, there are some interesting aspects of embracing this rapid growth in new technology.

The Benefits of Employee Development
Your employees are the lifeblood of your organization. Their knowledge and expertise are crucial to your company’s success and it takes time and effort to amass both. The good news is that most employees are willing—even eager—to learn and grow professionally.
Investing in learning programs can help your organization and team members enjoy the many benefits of employee development.
9. Improving business performance
Given the many benefits of employee development, it should come as no surprise that investing in learning has a tangible impact on your company’s bottom line. Everything from improving employee performance and engagement to reducing risk and turnover can improve profitability.
The Josh Bersin Company found organizations that facilitate career development are 3x more likely to delight customers, 4x more likely to innovate effectively, and 2.6x more likely to exceed financial targets. Similarly, Gallup reports companies that invest in development achieve 11% greater profitability.
With strong potential to see worthwhile returns on employee training and development, it would be a poor decision not to invest in these initiatives.
Stay tuned for a recap and some final thoughts on building an employee development program that works for your team coming in the next issue.
