Wrapping up the year |
Depending on how you “do” the next several weeks, you may be knee deep in wrapping paper, cozied up by a fire reading, watching lots of hockey and football, or dealing with a bunch of to-do lists that never feel like they’ll be checked off. Or you might be like me and step away from it all.
For the first time since the pandemic travel restrictions were lifted, I will not be spending the holidays and January on a different continent. In fact, the most travelling I have planned is to hit my local coffee shop a few times for a latte and catch up with the regulars. |
|
|
As life gets more involved and consumes all our waking hours, I’ve learned that it’s time to slow it down. I’ve got a bunch of books lined up and I’m going to continue with my part-time writing of our family’s memoires, carrying on my mom’s fifty years of genealogy research and documentation. And sleeping. Oh, Sleep Fairy, please be kind to me!
While our office is closed, I will be checking in and spending some time clearing out my inbox. It’s therapeutic in some ways. I can delete a massive amount of fluff and deal with a few things so there will be less holiday hangover, and Marian and I can hit the floor running in January. Amongst the day-to-day activities, we have webinars to line up, Moving Seniors Safely and May is Moving Month programs to prepare, and golf and the conference to plan.
While writing this blog, my inbox pinged with a message from friend Leanne Calderwood, who is a life skills coaching guru in my event planning world. As she freely admits, she is a massive goals geek and provided her circle with some tips on getting organized for the new year. I’ve shared these below. Sadly, it has reminded me that I do have some tasks to do on my own laptop, which I will do while some Hallmark movies are playing in the background.
Soups, tea, quiet, and naps. A perfect combination for me.
However you are spending the next few weeks and preparing for the new year, we wish you health and happiness and the ability to be kind to people each day. You never know what folks are going through.

A Note From Jeff Herszkowicz |
|
|
It was great seeing all of you who were able to attend this year’s CAM 2024 Convention and Trade Show in Mississauga. The CAM Team did a great job and we thank you for your efforts.
For those who could not make it, hopefully we see you in Kingston, Ontario next year.
I often get asked what product of ours got the most attention at the show. This year I brought along some curb ramps and hand trucks by B&P Manufacturing and they hands down were the winner this year. I even had people ask me if they could take them with them after the show. Over the past few weeks, we have had numerous calls on these products and taken several orders. |
|
|
Please feel free to reach out any time. I can’t believe it’s December already and I hope the year end is a busy one for all. We are starting off the holiday spirit here at FarrellPack with our hand trucks.
Speak soon,
Jeff Herszkowicz

Men at risk for heart disease may develop dementia up to a decade earlier than similarly at-risk women, a new study found.
“The influence of cardiovascular disease on dementia in men a decade before the females is not known before,” said lead study author Dr. Paul Edison, professor of neuroscience at Imperial College London. “This is novel finding with significant health implications.”

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle that reduces vascular risk factors throughout middle age is important such as staying physically active. In several news reports that circulated around November 28th it was suggested that this lifestyle in men needs to start in their 40s if not before.
Judging by the number of folks in the gym or doing random push-up challenges at the conference, we think that the younger set are looking after themselves.

Is It Time to Abandon Performance Reviews? |
|
|
Nov. 18, 2024, Jen Dewer, LinkedIn
Did you know that only two in 10 employees say their performance is managed in a way that motivates them to do outstanding work? Traditional performance management programs are clearly failing organizations — and company leaders are taking action
|
|
|
Among the more drastic measures, high-profile companies like GE, Deloitte, and Gap have eliminated performance reviews. Block CEO Jack Dorsey replaced reviews with continuous feedback and real-time, transparent job performance ratings.
Is this an ongoing trend or a passing phase?

In today’s fast-paced business environment, it's more important than ever for companies to invest in their employees’ training and development. By providing employees with the necessary tools, resources, and knowledge to succeed, companies can improve productivity, boost employee retention rates, and gain a competitive edge in the market.
Stay tuned for a ten-part series on the benefits of employee development. We’ll see you back here on January 14th!

Thank You, Cam, For 17 Years At CAM! |
|
|
Like many in our industry, Cam Carswell comes from a long line of movers, starting with Cam’s great grandfather. The ingrained passion for the industry is apparent in his long-term relationship with the Association.
In the early 70’s, the family company became an agent for Allied Van Lines and has remained so to this day.
|
|
|
Cam is a consummate professional in our industry and is well known for finding the good in every situation. He has raised the quality of service for the customers and is a sterling example of a reputable mover.
Cam joined the CAM board in 2007 and immediately got involved in committee work. He served as Vice-chair in 2015-2017 after which he did a two-year term before Mike Kolberg took the reins in 2019. Cam has continued to serve in the position of past Chair for the last 5 years. He also is responsible for urging Nancy Irvine to apply for the President’s role in 2017 as he knew her through the Sirva system.
Cam is the association’s longest serving member – having served for a total of 17 years! This is truly a milestone for this association – one that will be difficult to surpass.
The association is losing a guiding light – someone who has helped the association steer clear of rocky shores and find a safe bay from which it could grow and develop into the strong organization it is today.
Cam has helped the association promote excellence and ethics in this industry … an industry that’s clearly in his blood.
For this, we are truly grateful. Enjoy your retirement Cam! |

CAM 2024 Award Recipients Honoured |
For 24 years CAM has been recognizing excellence in the moving industry. Whether it’s a long-time high-profile employee, someone behind the scenes who has dedicated their work-life to the betterment of the industry, or a moving company that has gone beyond the call of duty to help their community, our Association wants to acknowledge people who should be recognized for their work to improve the moving industry.
The class of 2024 is no exception. CAM congratulated CAM2024 Award recipients at a lovely banquet two weeks ago. |

What A Show! |
For almost three decades, CAM has been the driving force behind movers connecting, learning, and socializing.
Whether you're a seasoned attendee or a first timer, the CAM2024 Conference was the place to be this November. We don’t even know where to begin. The Welcome Reception was loud and fun with lots of great activities and games. And the sessions were not only well attended, but the crowd heavily engaged allowing for much conversation during the lunch and coffee breaks.
We had planned for 90 but had 164 registered with 48% of those attendees new to the CAM conference. And we can’t thank you enough for showing up, participating, and supporting your trade association.
See you in Kingston!

Judging by the overwhelming positive comments on the conference, we’d say everyone was a winner. But specifically, the following folks won the exhibitor and sponsor gift cards and other fun things. |
|
|
The Super Stocking & Elf Sack |
|
|
Congratulations to Mike Krug of Globe Moving who won the Super Stocking! What started out as a $500 cash prize, grew to be full of cash, gift cards, exhibitor services and other prizes (including wine!) valued at over $1,900. The stocking got so full that we had to go to a supplement bag. Thanks to all the exhibitors who participated and made this a wildly popular activity for the conference attendees.
New this year was a second prize – the Elf Sack – won by Curtis Machmer of Jay’s Moving & Storage! The Elf Sack had a few “Elf on the Shelf” surprises, but also contained gift cards and other prizes.
