Springing Forward!

The clocks have changed for most of us and while you were taking some much-needed time off during March Break, Marian and I have been very busy. This week, we are amid our Moving Seniors Safely program with Canadian Association of Retired Persons (CARP), with tomorrow showcasing our live Facebook event with CARP members and their families.

Unlike the last few years where the focus was on moving scams, this year we are focussing more on trust – assuring older Canadians that with proper planning, CAM and our trusted members can help with successful preparation and execution of their move.  There is no doubt that for many seniors, moving at an advanced age could be the most stressful and worrisome one they will do in their lifetime, as it is often done with a life-changing circumstance forcing the transition to a new situation after living in a home for decades.  For movers, relocating seniors is a different type of move that involves special understanding, patience and empathy. I loved working with seniors – they’ve lived extraordinary lives, and their house’s contents tell that story.
I had great satisfaction ensuring that our crews took care of them as they entered the next phase of their lives.

With the warmer temperatures starting to appear on our weather forecasts and Match #2 of the TGL Golf championships on tonight, everyone is wound up and wanting to get out on the golf course. We’ve actually had folks checking in to see when our golf registration will be ready. I am happy to say that we will have registration ready to go in the next newsletter. You can circle your calendar now for Monday, September 29th.  We’re going later this year so that we aren’t conflicting with other conferences and golf tournaments.  Just think – you can get an extra three weeks of practice in!

Of course, CAM’s Spring Training promo is well underway. Whether it’s viewing the free videos for training your crew members and salespeople, getting the Canadian Professional Mover designation, or accessing the dozens of other resources we have available, the education section of the website has been super busy. And three webinars are queued up for April and May. Don’t forget to get signed up for those. More information is below in the education section.

Our main focus these past few months has been on firming up details with the conference.  As we were leaving the awards banquet last year in Mississauga, 'We’re going to Kingston' could be heard throughout the hallways as attendees were excited about learning of 2025's conference location. Look for that launch in April/more info to come soon.

And with Spring just around the corner, it’s time to finish planning for May is Moving Month. If you haven’t already, don’t forget to get your “I am CAM” clip into us. We’re getting the social posts done now and would love to include you.

Your employees are the lifeblood of your organization. Their knowledge and expertise are crucial to your company’s success and it takes time and effort to amass both. The good news is that most employees are willing — even eager — to learn and grow professionally.

Investing in learning programs can help your organization and team members enjoy the many benefits of employee development.

6. Boosting employee engagement

More than four in five employees (83%) say that improving their skills is one of their top priorities. While 88% are already putting a significant amount of time and effort toward this goal, offering development support can help you boost employee engagement.

Investing in your team members’ development demonstrates your organization’s commitment to their growth and success, motivating them to go above and beyond in their work. In fact, Gallup found that development is a top driver of employee engagement.

Organizations often see further benefit by pairing learning opportunities with internal mobility. Employees who move into new jobs within their organization are 3.5x more likely to be engaged than those who stay in their current roles.

Boosting employee engagement comes with additional benefits of its own. For example, higher employee engagement can lead to lower turnover, higher productivity, higher customer engagement — and higher profitability.

Stay tuned for part 7 on Cultivating a more appealing company culture coming in the next issue.

Getting Ready to Hire?  Careful About How You Offer the Job!

HCAMag.com, October 11, 2024

'If you send a bare-bones offer letter and the employee accepts, you're stuck with that,' says lawyer offering tips for HR folks.

A recent British Columbia Supreme Court ruling in Adams v. Thinkific Labs Inc. highlights the importance of comprehensive employment offer letters. Madeline Adams accepted an initial offer lacking termination clauses, and a subsequent document with these clauses was deemed unenforceable due to a lack of fresh consideration.

This decision warns employers that initial offer letters are often binding contracts. Employers should include all necessary terms from the start to avoid legal issues.

FMCSA New Blood Pressure Targets

Penske Bulletin, February 21, 2025

Truck drivers tend to live sedentary lifestyles, and sitting for 10 hours (or more) a day raises the risk for both heart attacks and strokes.  For this reason, groups like the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) now require drivers to meet new blood pressure targets during their Department of Transportation (DOT) physicals.

There is a massive handbook you can leaf through, but it boils down to this :

To keep your blood pressure in check :
1.    Move more often
2.    Watch what you eat
3.    Cut the nicotine
4.    Ease your mind
5.    Get enough sleep
6.    Go see a doctor

Cargo theft remains a growing concern in Canada, with Ontario accounting for 85% of all reported incidents in 2024, according to Overhaul’s newly released annual cargo theft report, that summarizes and analyzes theft data collected in 2024 across Canada and the U.S.

The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) remains the country’s biggest hotspot, while the remaining 15% of thefts were spread across British Columbia (5%), Saskatchewan (4%), Alberta (3%), Quebec (1%), New Brunswick (1%), and Newfoundland (1%).

Moving Seniors Safely – Essential Tips for Safe Transitions

As Canada faces a "silver tsunami" with a projected 68% growth in the senior population over the next two decades, CAM and the Canadian Association of Retired Persons (CARP) have joined forces for the 4th year to raise awareness about the challenges seniors face during relocation, including managing emotional stress, involvement of the family or an advocate, and the importance of choosing a trusted mover.

Together, we are providing practical tips and insights through information sessions and online resources to help seniors, and their families, manage the moving process effectively.

The Moving Seniors Safely (MSS) campaign offers several key benefits to seniors and their families:

•    Proactive Planning: The campaign encourages seniors to be proactive in planning their moves, including researching future living options, communicating with loved ones, and organizing belongings.
•    Awareness of Moving Scams: It raises awareness about common moving scams, helping seniors avoid financial risks by identifying red flags such as low-ball pricing and large upfront payments.
•    Access to Reliable Movers: The campaign connects seniors with trusted and reliable moving companies through CAM, ensuring safe and secure relocation experiences.
•    Emotional Support: It provides emotional support and resources, acknowledging the emotional challenges of downsizing and moving, offering webinars and counseling to help seniors navigate these transitions.
•    Comprehensive Resources: The campaign offers a wealth of practical tips and insights through online resources, including Q&A webinars and a dedicated section on the CAM website.

The Moving Seniors Safely promotion will run from March 24-31, 2025, with a live Q&A webinar on Facebook at 2:00 pm on March 26, 2025.  This event tends to be very popular and results in a spike in activity on the CAM website with folks researching movers’ sections.

CAM will be posting daily advice on social media and encourage you to share with comments about your own commitment to helping seniors on your pages.  We will also be directing folks to our very popular Moving Seniors Safely webpage.

This is by far the most expansive public campaign CAM does and over the next few weeks the MSS page will be reorganized as there is a lot of new content being edited and added.

Shining as a Certified Professional Mover

Canadian Association of Movers, March 11, 2025

Reputation plays a crucial role in both our business and personal lives, significantly influencing how others perceive and interact with us. This is particularly true in the moving industry, where customers rely heavily on trust, reliability, and professionalism when selecting their moving company.

Build a Strong Reputation

A solid reputation is built over time through:
1.    Consistent actions
2.    Accountability
3.    Positive treatment of others

People tend to prefer doing business with those they know, like, and trust. This preference often leads to:

•    Customer loyalty
•    Repeat business
•    Referral partnerships

A strong reputation will set a company apart from its competitors.  It can even attract top talent to your company, as people are drawn to successful teams with strong values and positive work cultures.

Your Reputation in the Moving Industry

In the moving industry, reputation is particularly critical. Consumers entrust movers with all their valuable possessions, which often hold significant emotional and financial value.  A strong reputation, partnered with your CAM certification, reassures customers that their belongings will be handled with care and professionalism.

Positive online reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations, as well as positive and engaging social media posts, are helping moving companies stand out in a competitive market. It goes without saying that customers are more inclined to choose a moving company with high ratings and compelling testimonials.

Overcome Industry Challenges

We know that the moving industry often faces negative press due to rogue operators and bad actors, making consumers cautious. A strong positive reputation and an association with CAM helps our legitimate movers differentiate themselves from scam operators who are known for overcharging, mishandling belongings and holding possessions "hostage."

•    Engage with the consumer through social media
•    Participate in community events
•    Promote your CAM membership

By maintaining integrity, transparency, promoting successes through 5-star reviews, having positive and engaging social media posts, as well as a strong community presence, reputable moving companies like you can continue to raise industry standards.

The Benefits of Employee Development

Your employees are the lifeblood of your organization. Their knowledge and expertise are crucial to your company’s success and it takes time and effort to amass both. The good news is that most employees are willing — even eager — to learn and grow professionally.

Investing in learning programs can help your organization and team members enjoy the many benefits of employee development.

5. Increasing employee retention

Two out of three employees have considered leaving their job because there aren’t enough opportunities for skills development or internal mobility. Turnover is expensive, especially when you factor in recruiting, onboarding, and lost opportunity costs.

Most organizations (93%) are concerned about retention and “providing learning opportunities” is the No. 1 thing employers are doing to reduce voluntary turnover. Offering development opportunities demonstrates your organization’s commitment to an employee’s long-term success, making your team members more likely to stay. In fact, 94% of employees say they would stay at a company longer if it invested in their professional development.

Rewarding employees with career advancement opportunities as they learn new skills can further boost retention. An employee who has made an internal move has a 75% likelihood of staying with their company after two years. This drops to 56% for employees who haven’t changed roles.

Stay tuned for part 6 on boosting employee engagement coming in the next issue.

Should Employers Ban “Bring Your Own AI”?

Individual productivity AI tools, such as conversational agents ChatGPT and digital assistants, are rapidly being adopted by employees in most industries. But due to security risks, some organizations are banning any unsanctioned use of “bring your own AI” (BYOAI).

Because of the “broad nature” of BYOAI tools, employees risk exposing their employers to data loss, intellectual property leakage, copyright infringement, and security breaches.
